About the Tracker for Chrome extension
The Tracker for Chrome extension uses the Location Services on the device to show the last-known position of the device on a map. Learn more about Location Services here.
IMPORTANT — For privacy reasons, you should obtain written consent from students and/or their parents or guardians before deploying this application on managed devices.
Installation and deployment of the Tracker for Chrome extension requires the following steps:
1. From the Google Admin console, navigate to Device management > Chrome > User Settings.
2. In the Apps and Extensions area of the page, click Manage force-installed apps.
3. Select Specify a Custom App.
4. In the ID field, copy and paste the following app ID:

6. Click Add to force install the app.
7. In the Google Admin console, navigate to Device Management > Chrome > User & Browser Settings and scroll down to Security.
8. Set the Geolocation parameter to “Allow sites to detect users’ geolocation”.
View the device location in Mobile Manager
To send its location to Mobile Manager, the device uses information from cellular, Wi-Fi, Global Positioning System (GPS) networks, and/or Bluetooth, depending on configuration and connection type.
The app updates its location every 30 seconds. If the device moves to a different location, the screen will refresh to show the new location.
1. In Mobile Manager, browse or search for the device by device name, serial number, asset tag, or MAC address.
2. Click the device to open the Device Details page.
3. Scroll down to the Location field on this page, then click Show Map. The map shows an indicator pointing to the device’s last known location. You can zoom in and out, or change the view from the toolbar at the top of the map.
IMPORTANT — Depending on your browser version and security settings, you may see the message “Your Browser’s security settings are preventing the map from displaying”. To view the map, you will need to allow the browser to display insecure or unsafe content on this page. Refer to the troubleshooting steps at the end of the article for tips on how to view the map.
- In Mobile Manager, browse or search for the device by device name, serial number, asset tag, or MAC address.
- Click the device to open the Device Details page.
- Click the Key Logger tab.
Q. I can’t get my web browser to display the map. How do I fix this?
A. For security reasons, modern web browsers are designed to warn users when a secure page (HTTPS) attempts to display non-secure content — in this case, an embedded map from another website.
If you see the message “Your browser’s security settings are preventing the map from displaying”, you will need to change the browser’s security settings for the page.
- Chrome: On the right side of the address bar, click the Shield icon, then click Load unsafe scripts.
- Safari: No warning is shown, and the map should appear without requiring user action.
- Firefox: On the left side of the address bar, click the Shield icon, then click the Options button and select Disable protection for now.
- Internet Explorer: At the bottom of the page, you’ll see a banner with the message “Only secure content is displayed.” On the right side of the banner, click the Show all content button.
