There are multiple ways to add and remove devices from groups

  • In the UI manually per device
  • In bulk with CSV imports

In the UI

Manually adding devices to groups

Ideal method when you need to add a few devices into groups.

Prerequisites

  • Devices need to already be enrolled

First navigate to the group where you would like the device to be added.

Group > Device Management > Devices

Enter the device name, serial number or asset tag in the search field (1).

Use the drop-menu (2) to match your search criteria.

Click the 'Add Membership' (3) button next to the search result.

Manually removing devices from groups:

Navigate over to the group where you like the device removed from.

Group > Device Management > Devices

This will show a list of all devices in the group.

Click on a device in the list, head over to its Memberships tab:

Press the 'Remove' button next to any groups or the user you wish to remove the device membership from.

Note:
Removing a user or group membership from a device will not remove any apps, books or revoke licenses that were deployed, however any inherited restrictions or policies would now be removed from the device (if no longer inherited from anywhere else).

CSV Import

Adding devices to groups in bulk

Preferred method when there are many devices to add or remove from groups.

Prerequisites

  • Devices need to already be enrolled
  • Groups require SIS IDs
  • Device serial numbers

In order to use the CSV methods detailed below the groups must have a SIS ID assigned to them.

Please refer to the following guide for more information on adding SIS IDs to existing groups or viewing current SIS IDs:

You can easily export serial numbers from currently enrolled devices by navigating to Home (for all) School or Group > Reports > Devices > Export Devices (top right) enter an email address when prompted and the CSV report will be sent there.

Once SIS IDs are assigned to groups, and you have device serial numbers exported you'll need to build a CSV file that has 2 columns, no headers.

1st column:  Device serial numbers
2nd column:  Group SIS ID

Example:

There can be multiple groups in this file.

Once you have the file ready, import to:

Home > Settings > CSV Import > Add Devices to Groups.

Removing devices from groups in bulk:

To remove devices from groups in bulk, again the groups will need SIS IDs and follow the same logic above.

Upload the 2 column CSV file to:

Home > Settings > CSV Import > Remove Devices from Groups

Notes:

  • The Home and School levels are not Groups as they are treated differently in the database, the CSV Import methods detailed above will not work at those levels.
  • Removing a user or group membership from a device will not remove any apps, books or revoke licenses that were deployed, however any inherited restrictions or policies would now be removed from the device (if no longer inherited from anywhere else).
